In November of 1996 the laboratory received 15mls of pleural effusion fluid from a patient with a prior history of breast cancer. The cells in the specimen were cytologically positive for adenocarcinoma. Given the the small size of the specimen, the cells were seeded in our Ham’s F12 medium with 5% FBS, insulin and hydrocortisone and the cell line was derived directly from those primary cultures.
